Essay

50 cent candy shop is a hip hop and 'dirty rap' genre song, that was released early January in 2005. As the video starts you start to see a lot of women with little clothes on throughout the whole of the video. Many men that are also in the video you see taking a good look at these women this is known as male gaze, when the men are attracted to the women because of their appearance, this music video shows a good example of male gaze.

At the very start of the video you see 50 cent getting out of a posh car outside a big house, this is to show that he has got power and money, you then see him walking through the doors to be greeted by a number of women that are wearing short dresses or just there underwear. The first lyrics/speech you hear in the song is 'welcome to the candy shop' which is welcoming 50 cent to a room full of girls known as 'candy' for him. A lot of camera shots are shown to make the girls look sexy and glamours, a lot of close ups to the women's faces. The lyrics relate to the music video in a number of ways, the way that the women approach the male relates to lyrics such as 'i'll let you lick my lollipop' this is known to be quite sexual. Most male gaze videos are to do with women in a sexual way. All the lyrics that are sung throughout the song relate to the music video in a way that its meant to be sexual and the women want to attract males attention.  When 50 cent is sitting on the car you see a wide angle shot, in this you see the car that he is sitting on and the house in the background as well as the clothes that he is wearing, this is done to show power.

As 50 cent enters a bedroom in the video there is editing and camera shots that show the women on the bed and then again in the background behind her at the same time. This has been edited so that the male who is attracted to the women shows more attention. In the video there is only one male therefore all of the women in the music video have to compete to get the attention of the male. When the women are not just wearing underwear in the many of shots that they show they are also wearing skimpy little clothes or a sexual uniform that will also attract the attention of the male.

A good thing about this video is that it isn't too much performance within the narrative. throughout the first couple of minutes of the video it is all similar and nothing changes then it suddenly switches into a dance routine this brings the attention to the males because there is a lot more of the girls dancing at the same time and they are all wearing the same clothes. In the background whilst 50 cent is singing at around 2:13 minutes there is a wall behind him that has been edited to the girls dancing. A close up of the women in the bath is done to look more sexual to the male in the music video and as well to the audience that are attracted to the music video. Another good way of editing in the music video is when the women is singing in the photo frame as 50 cent walks past, this is done to show that 50 cent cant get away from any of the girls and they are all trying to win his attention.

A lot of the lightening in the shots is quite dark this is done to show more attention to the women that are dancing and walking around the house. The lightening gets better and more lighter when focusing on a main object. A lot of props are used within the video, an example would be whips, bath objects, cars etc.

At the end of the music video you see that it has only been a dream and that it is what 50 cent has imagined to see in the house, and he is being served at a takeaway shop by a women who is fully clothed and working.

What music means to me

Audience questions

How do you consume music?

When? do you have a daily music routine? Is some music more suitable at a certain time of day than another?i normally listen to music in the mornings so that it wakes me up before school. i tend to listen to music that puts me in a good mood so that i will stay in that mood for the rest of the boys. When it comes to later on in the day, i listen to more chilled out songs when im in bed.

Where? clubs, bedroom, gigs, car?
Most of the time i listen to music when i am getting ready to do something for the day or not, i normally listen to music in my bedroom on the docking station, i listen to more loud music then quiet. i also listen to music when i am walking as i feel it wastes a lot of time and doesnt feel like the walk is so long. i also love to listen to music in the car as i dont like sitting in silence i listen to the radio or a

Who with? do you share your music or is it an individual experience?
I tend to listen to alot of music when im with friends, we enjoy listening to loud music that we can sing and dance a long too. i also listen to music a lot when im on my own.

How? radio, computer, ipod, tv, live, dancing, homework, getting ready ie doing other things - background wallpaper
i listen to music a lot from my ipod which i then plug into my docking station to make the music louder. depending on where abouts i am would depend on how i listen to the music. if i was to be in the car i would listen to the radio, if i was to be in the living room i would listen to music channels on the TV.

Why? What are the pleasures associated with music consumption? What does it offer the audience and what needs does it gratify?
The music that i listen too is always loud and has a lot of beat to it. This is because i like listening to music that is going to put me in a good mood and isnt a depressing song that i wouldnt enjoy listening too.

Representation

Voyeurism - mariah carey touch my body.
Throughout the video you see there are no facial shots of mariah carey, this is because the shots are more of the body. Mariah carey is unaware of the sexual looks she is getting in the video by the man that seems to have a crush on her throughout the video.

Male Gaze - 50 cent, Candy shop.
Throughtout the video you will there are a lot of women that do not have a lot of clothes on and also they are shown to be doing sexual moves. This is known as male gaze as alot of the men are interested in the women and the sexual moves they do. Males like to get involved in this video and also stare a lot.

Female gaze - she makes me wanna.

strong dominant female.- beyonce if i were a boy.

No rest, dry the river.

In class today we was asked  by our teacher to listen to a music video without watching what happens in the video. we closed our eyes to listen to the lyrics in the music video to help us answer the question as to what we could picture when listening to the music and listening to the lyrics. we was asked a series of questions about the music video.

What are the emotions it stirs?
When i was listening to the music and lyrics in the video i visualised a relationship problem between a male and a female and the male singing was trying to win the women back. i picture the man following the female till she would understand what the man had to say about the relationship.
What images are conjured up in your mind when you hear the song?
When i listened to this song i thought of images that related to an end of a relationship. i thought this because of the lyrics that were sung such as the man feeling he has been left and that he now has no one else to make him happy. i got images that the man was trying to make the women feel like he now cant be happy and that he only wants that one women to be in a realtionship with and to make him happy.
Intertextuality, voyeurism, performance, narrative, abstract? A combination?
i would personally think that this video is a narrative video and that the band would do alot more to show the audience what the lyrics meant to him, but at the same time the video is more performance as sometimes through the video the band doesnt show a narrative.
What did others say about their ideas for a music video?
  • shots from different situations eg, arguing, fighting. This would show a end of someones relationship.
  • A wedding with photos of both people at the wedding as single people, then a future picture of a leading divorce.
  • Roman soliders.
  • Man walking away from camera along a road in a differnt country.
  • urban/london. Man walking along pavement walks past another man with a girl he is heartbroken about.
  • Bad singing live at a performance.
What is the connection between music, lyrics, and visuals?
At first the music starts calm and softly there isnt much connection between the lyrics and how you would visual the song to be without seeing the video. As the music starts to get a lot faster when instruments are then involved, such as the guitar, the lyrics start to relate more to what you can hear and what you would think is going on in the video. the lyrics ' i could see how still i'd between' relates to the visuals as you see the men laying in the rocks still throughout the video.

Banana Phone creative task.

Representation within a music video

The representation on this music video shows that Miley Cyrus has a lot of power within herself.
A lot of iconography is used within the video with prob such as a hammer and a 'wrecking ball' these are powerful props that could be dangerous this show that the lyrics and music video relate. During the video you see that Miley Cyrus doesn't wear any clothes whilst on the wreaking ball this shows that sexual empowerment. When this happens in the video it would attract a lot of males, this would lead to male gaze. Miley Cyrus invited herself to look sexual in the music video, Attracting other people mainly males to watch the video and listen to her music. Female roles in a music video are us ally known to be dancers, glamorous or show important roles. Different camera shots are used in the video to make Miley look more sexual, an example of this would be the camera zooms into Miley whilst she is swinging on the ball leaning back, naked. The setting where the music video is filmed is a lower class stereotype construction site this is appropraite because it realtes to the way the lyrics are sang and the way everything is set in the music video. The only person in the music video is miley which means she is already getting all the attention in the video but because she does what shes does with the secxual moves and naked shots it attracts more people and she would get more attention onto herself. When miley is singing there is a close up of her face watching her sing this then changes when she shows action with hammering down the walls. using a prop like a hammer make miley look strong and have a lot of power this is what males would normally do within in a music video.

Textual Analysis Music Video 1

The music video i am analysing is Adele - Chasing Pavements. This video was directed by Spike Lee. The genre of this video is very narrative there is no performance during this music video.
The relationships between the lyrics and visuals is that the Adele the actor in the music video is acting out what the lyrics say during the song. an example of this is at 0:52 seconds you see the actors rolling across the pavement. The relationship between the music and visuals is that the beat of the song goes along with the video it all realtes together and isnt messy.
