Essay
50 cent candy shop is a hip hop and 'dirty rap' genre song, that was released early January in 2005. As the video starts you start to see a lot of women with little clothes on throughout the whole of the video. Many men that are also in the video you see taking a good look at these women this is known as male gaze, when the men are attracted to the women because of their appearance, this music video shows a good example of male gaze.
At the very start of the video you see 50 cent getting out of a posh car outside a big house, this is to show that he has got power and money, you then see him walking through the doors to be greeted by a number of women that are wearing short dresses or just there underwear. The first lyrics/speech you hear in the song is 'welcome to the candy shop' which is welcoming 50 cent to a room full of girls known as 'candy' for him. A lot of camera shots are shown to make the girls look sexy and glamours, a lot of close ups to the women's faces. The lyrics relate to the music video in a number of ways, the way that the women approach the male relates to lyrics such as 'i'll let you lick my lollipop' this is known to be quite sexual. Most male gaze videos are to do with women in a sexual way. All the lyrics that are sung throughout the song relate to the music video in a way that its meant to be sexual and the women want to attract males attention. When 50 cent is sitting on the car you see a wide angle shot, in this you see the car that he is sitting on and the house in the background as well as the clothes that he is wearing, this is done to show power.
As 50 cent enters a bedroom in the video there is editing and camera shots that show the women on the bed and then again in the background behind her at the same time. This has been edited so that the male who is attracted to the women shows more attention. In the video there is only one male therefore all of the women in the music video have to compete to get the attention of the male. When the women are not just wearing underwear in the many of shots that they show they are also wearing skimpy little clothes or a sexual uniform that will also attract the attention of the male.
A good thing about this video is that it isn't too much performance within the narrative. throughout the first couple of minutes of the video it is all similar and nothing changes then it suddenly switches into a dance routine this brings the attention to the males because there is a lot more of the girls dancing at the same time and they are all wearing the same clothes. In the background whilst 50 cent is singing at around 2:13 minutes there is a wall behind him that has been edited to the girls dancing. A close up of the women in the bath is done to look more sexual to the male in the music video and as well to the audience that are attracted to the music video. Another good way of editing in the music video is when the women is singing in the photo frame as 50 cent walks past, this is done to show that 50 cent cant get away from any of the girls and they are all trying to win his attention.
A lot of the lightening in the shots is quite dark this is done to show more attention to the women that are dancing and walking around the house. The lightening gets better and more lighter when focusing on a main object. A lot of props are used within the video, an example would be whips, bath objects, cars etc.
At the end of the music video you see that it has only been a dream and that it is what 50 cent has imagined to see in the house, and he is being served at a takeaway shop by a women who is fully clothed and working.
